Volos Academy for Theological Studies presents the second online event of this year’s “Time for Action” series. On Wednesday, February 9, 2022, 7:00 pm (Athens time), Rev. Dr. Graham McGeoch, Professor at Faculdade Unida de Vitória, Brazil, will deliver his lecture on “Russian émigré Theology and Liberation Theology in Latin America”. Latin American Liberation Theology is shaped by two historical events: the Cuban Revolution and Vatican II. This lecture asks what influences, if any, Orthodox Theology has on Latin American Libera-tion Theology. A consideration of Russian Emigré Theology is important since many of the first generation of Latin American Liberation Theologians studied in Europe, where Paris was the cultural capital of Russians abroad. In fact, while Paris was the cultural capital, the River Plate Basin (Buenos Aires and Montevideo) and Latin America was at the periphery of Russian Emigré Movements and Theology. Russian ideas circulated widely in Latin America from the 19th century onwards, due to migration and publishing. Freedom and liberation have been key concepts adopted and adapted by Latin American Liberation Theologians from Russian Emigré Theology.

Graham McGeoch is a theologian and minister of the Church of Scotland. He teaches Theology & Religious Studies at Faculdade Unida de Vitória, Brazil and collaborates with UNIperiferias –an interna-tional university based in the favela Maré, Rio de Janeiro– which brings together scholars, activists and inhabitants at the periphery across the world. He served as a parish minister for over 10 years in Scotland and Portugal. He was a non-Executive Director of the Edinburgh Interfaith Association (2015-2016), member of the Scottish Parliament's Cross-Party Group on Cuba and Venezuela (2013-2017), vice-moderator of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland (2014-2017). He served on the Geneva-based World Council of Churches Executive and its Central Committee (2006-2013). He studied English Literature and Politics at the University of Glasgow, Theology at the Presbyterian University of Mackenzie, São Paulo, Theology at the University of Edinburgh, and Theology & Religious Studies at the University of Glasgow. He has lived and worked in Africa, Europe and Latin America. He is a member of the Society of Latin American Studies and the International Orthodox Theological Association.
