ENCOUNTERS WITH ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY IN GREECE

Münster, Germany, June 27, 2024 et seq.

The opening of the exhibition "Encounters with Orthodox Christianity in Greece" ("Begegnungen mit dem Orthodoxen Christentum in Griechenland"), with photographs by Olya Gluschenko and Costis Drygianakis, took place on June 27, 2024, at the Faculty of Protestant Theology of the University of Münster, Germany. The exhibition includes photographs from the Church world of the Metropolis of Demetrias, shot in a period of almost twenty years (from Easter 2005 to Easter 2024) and focuses on the current real life of Orthodox Christianity in the Greek province, seeking the beauty hidden in the everyday details and in the constant transformations of the old ecclesiastical heritage.

Introducing the exhibition, its main initiator, Professor Hans-Peter Grosshans, referred to the fundamental contribution of Greece to the development of the European culture, underlining the love of Germans for the land of Homer, leaving aside the political confrontations in the era of the economic crisis, and clarifying that this exhibition, as a glimpse from the inside, gives an opportunity for a deeper acquaintance with the ecclesiastical reality in Greece. In response, Costis Drygianakis mentioned the importance of the work of German scholars in reviving the interest for the Greek culture since the Renaissance, while he noticed that a large part of the current Greek Orthodox Christianity remains little known, virtually unacknowledged even inside the Greek territory, and it is exactly this side of Christianity that the exhibition focuses on.

On June 29, there was a visit in the exhibition by the participants of the Conference "Orthodox Christianity and Identity Politics", organized by the Chair of Orthodox Theology of the University of Münster in collaboration with the Volos Academy of Theological Studies and other organizations. A short guided tour was held with a discussion of the particular topics.

It is reminded that the work of Olya Gluschenko and Costis Drygianakis came out in the form of an album entitled "‘ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ, ᾗ ἐπορευθημεν’: Unfrequented places in the Metropolis of Demetrias", published in 2022 by the Volos Academy for Theological Studies, with the support of the Region of Thessaly and the European Research Infrastructure RESILIENCE.
