Photographic Exhibition

ENCOUNTERS WITH ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY IN GREECE

Münster, Germany, June 27, 2024 et seq.

An exhibition with photographs by Olya Gluschenko and Costis Drygianakis will be held in Münster, Germany. The exhibition is organized by the Faculty of Protestant Theology of the University of Münster, in collaboration with the Volos Academy for Theological Studies and is entitled “Encounters with Orthodox Christianity in Greece” (“Begegnungen mit dem Orthodoxen Christentum in Griechenland”). The inauguration will take place on Thursday, June 27, 2024 at 12 noon, at the Faculty of Protestant Theology (Universitätsstr. 13-17, 1st Floor), in the presence of the artists. The exhibition is held on the occasion of the Conference “Orthodox Christianity and Identity Politics”, organized by the Chair for Orthodox Theology of the same University, in collaboration with the Volos Academy for Theological Studies and other organizations worldwide.

The exhibition includes photographs of churches, chapels and monasteries of the Metropolis of Demetrias in Thessaly, Central Greece, shot over a period of almost twenty years (from Easter 2005 to Easter 2024). It focuses on the present-day situation of Orthodox Christianity in the Greek countryside, without aiming to any evaluative or thorough documentation. Incorporating concepts of contemporary cultural anthropology, the two photographers attempt to add visibility to this generally overlooked world, searching for the beauty hidden in the everyday details and in the constant transformations of the old church heritage.

The work of Olya Gluschenko and Costis Drygianakis has also been published in an album entitled “‘On the roads we travelled’: Unfrequented places in the Metropolis of Demetrias”, published in 2022 by the Volos Academy for Theological Studies, with the support of the Region of Thessaly and the European Programme Resilience. A few copies will be available for sale at the Exhibition.
