ECCLESIASTICAL AUTHORITY AND ACADEMIC FREEDOM IN ORTHODOXY

The dialectical relationship between authority and freedom constitutes a persistent theological problem that is now present in the field of academic research as well, and thus, in recent years academic freedom is questioned by Churches in states where Orthodoxy prevails. Prompted by the recent adventures of distinguished professors of theology at the University of Belgrade, whose permission to teach was revoked by the Church of Serbia, the discussion on the right of the Church hierarchy to intervene in academic work has been intensified, bringing to the surface interesting details about the situation in Russia and Romania, where the Orthodox Churches went through a period of peculiar coexistence with the communist regimes, which, contrary to popular belief, did not always bear the characteristics of persecution. In Greece problems are anything but absent, like e.g. stagnation or introversion, though the theological academic education there was developed in a different, secularized context.

Such topics will be approached in the round table “Ecclesiastical Authority and Academic Freedom in Orthodoxy” which is organized by the Volos Academy for Theological Studies on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. (Athens time), with the participation of Dr. Pantelis Kalaitzidis (Volos, Greece), Dr. Milan Vukomanović (Belgrade, Serbia), Dr. Ionut Biliuta (Targu Mures, Romania) and Mrs. Inga Leonova, MA (Boston, USA). The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Assaad Elias Kattan (Münster, Germany) and it will be in English with interpretation into Greek.
