Thessaloniki, Holy Monastery of Vlatadon

On June 28-29 the Anniversary Jubilee Symposium of the Patriarchal Institute of Patristic Studies was successfully held in Thessaloniki (Holy Monastery of Vlatadon) on the occasion of its 50 years of history and contribution to Orthodox theology, Church and culture.

During the first day of the Symposium dedicated to the history, the present and the future of the Institute and at the first morning session chaired by Professor Emeritus Dr. Georgios Nakos (Law School, University of Thessaloniki, former member of the Board of Directors of the Patriarchal Institute of Patristic Studies) the speakers included: Professor Emeritus Dr. Evangelos Chryssos (University of Athens, former member of the scientific committee of the Patriarchal Institute of Patristic Studies), “The foundation and the years of the establishment of the Patriarchal Institute;” Professor Dr. Heinz Ohme (Faculty of Theology, Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany), “Bishop Hermann Kunst and Professor Wilhelm Scheemelcher as sponsors of the Patriarchal Institute;” Dr. Erich Lamberz (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, former Research Fellow of the Manuscripts Department of the Patriarchal Institute), “The scientific exploration of the Mount Athos Libraries and the cataloging of their manuscripts in the context of the activities of the Patriarchal Institute,” and Professor Emeritus Dr. Chrysanthi Mavropoulou-Tsioumi (University of Thessaloniki), “The program of the illustrated manuscripts of Mount Athos at the Patriarchal Institute.”

During the second morning session chaired by Mr. Leonidas Papadopoulos (Charity Brotherhood of Men of Thessaloniki, Member of the Board of Directors of the Patriarchal Institute), the speakers included: Professor Dr. Konstantinos Chrestou (University of Thessaloniki, and General Secretary of the Association of Macedonian Studies), “The scientific planning and the publishing program of the Patriarchal Institute;” Professor Theodoros Yangou (Faculty of Theology, University of Thessaloniki, Vice President of the Patriarchal Institute), “The scientific and publishing program of the Patriarchal Institute under the direction of Professor Ioannis Fountoulis;” Professor Symeon Paschalides (Faculty of Theology, University of Thessaloniki, Director of the Patriarchal Institute), “The present and the future of the Patriarchal Institute of Patristic Studies.” After the end of the morning sessions, the awarding of sponsors and distinguished members of the Patriarchal Institute took place, while during the two morning sessions the music group of the 7th Lyceum of Thessaloniki presented a short musical program with the participation of the well-known performer Dilek Koç. The first day of the symposium was completed with the Great Hierarchical Verpers of the Feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul in the Katholicon of the Holy Monastery of Vlatadon and the festive speech by the New Testament professor Rev. Dr. Ioannis Skiadaresis on the topic: “The spiritual man in the theology of the Apostle Paul,” and the ceremony of the unveiling of the commemorative plates of the Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Directors and Scientific Members of the Patriarchal Institute.

The second day of the symposium, began with the Matins and the Hierarchic divine liturgy at the Katholicon of the Monastery of Vlatadon, and was dedicated to the establishment of a network of co-operation between academic institutions and organizations active in the inter-Orthodox world. In this framework and after the presentation of the network and its objectives by Professor Symeon Paschalides, the first morning session took place chaired by Dr. Miltiadis Konstantinou (Dean and Professor, Faculty of Theology, University of Thessaloniki), the speakers included: Dr. Flora Karayanni (Archaeologist, Ministry of Culture, Scientific Member of the Patriarchal Institute), “New scientific actions of the Patriarchal Institute;” H.E. Metropolitan Nikitas of Dardanellia (Director of the Patriarchal Orthodox Institute, “Patriarch Athenagoras”), “The scientific work of the Patriarchal Orthodox Institute “Patriarch Athenagoras” in USA;” Dr. Konstantinos Zorbas (General Director, Orthodox Academy of Crete), “The work of the Orthodox Academy of Crete: A 50 years contribution to the Church and society;” Dr. Pantelis Kalaitzidis (Director, Volos Academy for Theological Studies; Lecturer, Hellenic Open University; Research Fellow, KU Leuven), “The scientific and publishing work of the Volos Academy for Theological Studies and its Research Center.”

During the second morning session chaired by Mr. Vasileios Papas (President of the Accosiation of Macedonian Studies), the speakers included: H.E. Metropolitan Vasileios of Konstantia and Ammochostos, “The work of the Cultural Academy, ‘St. Epiphanius’ of the Holy Metropolis of Konstantia and Ammochostos;” Dr. Charalambos Chotzakoglou (General Director of the World Forum for Religions and Cultures of the Holy Kykkos Monastery), “The scientific work of the World Forum for Religions and Cultures of the Holy Kykkos Monastery and its general cultural activities;” Dr. Manolis Varvounis (Director of the Center of Ecclesiastical, Historical and Cultural Studies of the Holy Metropolis of Samos and Ikaria), “The Center of Ecclesiastical, Historical and Cultural Studies of the Holy Metropolis of Samos and Ikaria and its scientific work;” Dr. Anastasios Douros (Director of Mount Athos Center), “The scientific and publishing work of the Mount Athos Center; ” Dr. Demetrios Plexousakis (Vice President of the Foundation for Research and Technology), “The scientific and research work of the Foundation for Research and Technology for culture and cultural heritage.” During these two sessions the speakers had the opportunity to refer to the history and the work of the institutions they represented.

The second day of the symposium was completed with the signing of a Memorandum establishing a network of co-operation between scientific institutions of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and ecclesiastical organizations of Greece and Cyprus, as well as the bilateral cooperation of the Patriarchal Institute of Patristic Studies with the Foundations for Research and Technology and the Mount Athos Center.

The Network, joined by the Patriarchal Institute of Patristic Studies along with the Institute for Post-Graduate Studies in Orthodox Theology (Chambésy, Geneva), the Patriarchal Orthodox Institute “Patriarch Athenagoras” (Berkeley, USA), the Orthodox Academy of Crete (Greece), the Volos Academy for Theological Studies (Greece), the World Forum for Religions and Cultures of the Holy Kykkos Monastery (Cyprus), the Cultural Academy “St. Epiphanius” of the Holy Metropolis of Konstantia and Ammochostos (Cyprus), the Center of Ecclesiastical, Historical and Cultural Studies of the Holy Metropolis of Samos and Ikaria (Greece), and the Mount Athos Center (Greece), was established with a view to cooperation between all parties on the role of patristic and ecclesiastical tradition in the modern world, the study and promotion of Orthodox theology and Christian culture in its various manifestations during Byzantine and post-Byzantine up to our days, the dialogue between religions, etc.

The proceedings of the anniversary jubilee symposium were completed at the evening of the second day with the musical performance “The Unforgettable Garden” by the music group “En Chordais.”

Apart from the Director, the Volos Academy for Theological Studies was also represented by Dr. Nikolaos Asproulis, (Deputy Director, and Lecturer, Hellenic Open University) and Mrs. Tania Avella (BA in Theology, MSc. in Education, Member of the Volos Academy Training Team for Religious Education).
